Jet Air welcomes ex-employees back on board; 200 accept offer

In what signals a revival of the domestic airline sector, the country’s largest private carrier Jet Airways has asked hundreds of its former employees to re-join the carrier. Nearly 200 cabin staff who had left the company during the slowdown in the industry have already accepted the airline’s offer. Jet Airways is seeking to expand its fleet as well as its network. “We have contacted 400 people (who left the company since October 2008) and out of them, nearly 200 have re-joined us,” Jet Airways chief commercial officer Sudheer Raghavan told FE. The total staff strength of Jet Airways has come down from 13,500 in October 2008 to 11,500 in June 2010. About 2,000 ground and cabin staff had earlier put in their papers citing lack of advancement in their careers. The airline had resorted to fleet reduction and route rationalisation amid slackening demand for air travel. Jet Airways had, in October 2008, handed out pink slips to nearly 1,900 staff, but had taken back all of them within two days after an agitation by the sacked employees and pressure from trade unions and the Shiv Sena, the Maharashtra-centered political outfit. Most domestic airlines have now resumed hiring as they start expanding their operations to cater to the growing demand. Local air traffic has registered double-digit growth since June 2009 owing to the strong economy and an improved market sentiment.

India’s civil aviation sector to be in world’s top five: Praful Patel

India’s civil aviation sector will be among the top five in the world in the next five years, Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel said here.
“In the last six years we have been successful in bringing a revolution in India’s civil aviation sector, I do not mind saying that,” Mr. Patel said after inaugurating the new domestic—cum—international terminal at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International (SVPI) Airport here, which is likely to become operational from August 15.
“In 2004—05, we were considering our civil aviation sector as big, but at world level it was not much recognised.
In just six years, India’s civil aviation sector is ranked ninth in the world.
“In the next five years, India’s civil aviation sector will be among the top five in the world,” Mr. Patel said.
Mr. Patel, who had laid the foundation of the building in 2007, said inauguration of the new terminal at the Ahmedabad airport was a rare occasion. “It is a rare occasion when a minister lay the foundation of a building and inaugurates it too.”
The Aviation Minister also expressed the need for more air services in Gujarat, looking at the development.
“There should be increase of air service in Gujarat be it Ahmedabad, Surat, Rajkot, Vadodara, or Bhavnagar. Central Civil Aviation ministry would support all projects for Gujarat and we assure you there would be no discrimination,” he said.
When Mr. Patel requested the Gujarat government to consider the viability gap funding (VGF) model of the Centre, Chief Minister Narendra Modi said, “In the VGF model for north eastern states, it is the Central government which is funding the gap for airline connectivity. If this is given to Gujarat, I will adopt it right now.”

During the past year GoAir has been on a continuous growth phase. For the period of April 2009 -March 2010, GoAir flew 2.41 million passengers as against 0.95 million passengers during the same period in 2008-2009 thus achieving a 153 per cent growth rate in passenger traffic. International & domestic passenger traffic aid Jet Airways log strong growth in July 2010

Capitalizing on the improvement in global business and holiday passenger traffic to overseas destinations, Jet Airways, India’s premier international airline, has yet again achieved impressive seat factors of over 83.1% for its international operations. The airline has clocked a strong 27.8% growth in international revenue passengers which stood at 3.89 lakh in July 2010 as compared to the same period last year.

Jet Airways and JetLite have also achieved the highest on time performance (OTP) among the scheduled domestic carriers for the second consecutive month in July 2010. As per statistics released by the Director General of Civil Aviation, Jet Airways and JetLite posted 89.1% and 90% respectively on the critical service parameter of On Time Performance in July 2010.

According to Mr. Nikos Kardassis, CEO, Jet Airways, “The organization’s strong performance for the tenth-consecutive month highlights, that we are the preferred airline carrier both internationally and in India for our guests. Jet Airways has retained the leadership position in an increasingly competitive market thanks to several initiatives such as constant product and service innovation, newly introduced codeshares, improved On Time Performance, all of which has manifested itself in superior service quality, greater reliability and enhanced connectivity for our guests.
